In addition to your courses, we endeavor to provide a variety of on-campus opportunities to support your vocational discernment, professional formation, and, eventually, law school application and selection process. October 27: A Rainy Night in Georgia
In December 2000, Derwin Brown, the newly elected sheriff of DeKalb County, Georgia, was ambushed and murdered in his own driveway just days before taking office. He had run on reform—promising to clean up corruption and restore integrity to the sheriff’s department—defeating the powerful incumbent in a bitter runoff.
The case fell to J.Tom Morgan, then the county’s elected District Attorney. Working alongside local, state, and federal law enforcement, Morgan pursued the case through months of dead ends, mounting pressure, and intense public scrutiny. It became a national media sensation, combining political intrigue with revelations of government corruption, murder-for-hire plots, and a never-before-tried legal strategy in the Georgia criminal justice system. Then the case became personal: Morgan learned that his own name was next on the killer’s hit list.

Cohorts & Reading Groups
For many students, the law Pre-Law pathway through college can feel disconnected and uncertain. Our cohorts and reading groups are designed to bring students together for regular meetings that foster intellectual community and support growth in character and professional identity.

First-Year Cohort: Concepts of Law & Justice
This discussion group uses a series of hypothetical cases to explore different ways of understanding the concepts of law and justice.
The first year cohorts meet weekly for four weeks. This fall, in an effort to accommodate students’ schedules, we will offer two different cohorts. The first will begin on Tuesday, September 15 and the other on Monday, October 19.
Reading Group: Murder the Truth
This encore reading group provides students with one more chance to read and discuss David Enrich’s 2025 book Murder the Truth: Fear, the First Amendment, and a Secret Campaign to Protect the Powerful. We will use Enrich’s provocative text to explore the connections between law, free expression, and journalism in the United States—as well as the dual roles lawyers play as client advocates and public citizens.
Participants will receive a free copy of the book and refreshments during meetings!
This reading group will meet once a week for four weeks, kicking off at noon on Monday, September 14.
Reading Group: A Rainy Night in Georgia
This reading group will take up J Tom Morgan’s soon to be released book A Rainy Night in Georgia, which tells a true story of government corruption, political intrigue, murder-for-hire, and a never before tried legal strategy in the Georgia Criminal Justice System. Throughout, we will reflect on challenges to lawyerly integrity and why a firm professional identity, grounded in the legal profession’s values and guiding principles is so important—both for lawyers and for those whom they serve.

This reading group will meet once a week for four weeks, kicking off at 12:30pm on Tuesday, October 27.
Workshops
Personal Statement Workshop
The Personal Statement is one of your best opportunities to help a law school understand why you want to be a lawyer. It should provide a concise and well-written snapshot of your self-understanding as an aspiring advocate. In this workshop, students will develop and refine their personal statements with the help of the Director of Pre-Law, WFU Law Admissions Professionals, and other WFU Faculty!
Best to accommodate our students, two sections of the workshop will be offered. Each section will meet once a week for four weeks, with one kicking off on September 23 and the other on September 24.

Online LSAT Test Anxiety Workshop
Join us online at 4:00 PM on November 11. The LSAT is one of the most important tests that many people will take. With stakes high, anxiety naturally follows. Together we will talk through what may be causing testing anxiety and how you can overcome it to put your best foot forward as you take the LSAT!
